Resume

A resume is a summary of your experience in the field, yourself, and your skills. Building a good resume is extremely important regardless of the field you want to get in. Presenting your skills in a unique way always gets the attention of the client or the employer. As a designer, the employer and the client will automatically expect you to be more creative and to stand out than in any other field. This is why starting from the resume, everything about your portfolio should speak for itself. Make sure it catches the client’s attention. Try to make your resume more visual than textual. Sketch, and put pictures, illustration to express what you want to say to the employer.

Your designs

Step 1

When it comes to representing your designs there are endless possibilities. So how do get the employer to hire you instead of some other designer? Yes, you can just put in the pictures and cad drawings of the spaces that you have designed but that does not catch the employer’s attention. The main focus is on how you dealt with a problem when it arose.

Step 2

Start by mentioning the approach and observation that you made about the space when you started working on the project. This step is important as it highlights your observation skills and the direction in which you think. As a designer, observing a space is the key feature in understanding what can be done with it. Therefore, it is important to mention your observation and your approach so that the employer can understand how clearly you can think when assigned a task.

Step 3

When you are working on a project, several problems arise. As a designer, you find a solution that fits both function and form. Some of the problems can be quite challenging and might need a lot of brainstorming. You surely want that to be highlighted in the portfolio as it tells the employer about your ability to think out of the box and also well you can tackle challenges. We can all agree that designers are expected to not only come up with a solution that is functional but also one that is aesthetically pleasing.

Step 4

Mention about the budget constraints, labor constraints, or space constraints on the site that you might have faced, and mentioned how you dealt with them. This gives the employer the knowledge that you have worked on a site and how well you can handle the labor and the budget. And what is the best you can prove under a budget constraint which is quite appealing to the clients? Let’s face it everyone wants to save money at the end of the day.

Step 5

You can add pictures of your 3d views to let the employer know about your software skills. That is always great but you can also add pictures of the actually finished site. This gives the client a real view and he/she can picture more clearly what he/she is paying for. Therefore, always add both the 3d views and live pictures of the site.

Your Concept

What is the use of building a portfolio is you can’t add what you want to create. At the end of the day, it’s all about your ideas and concepts that can turn into reality at the end of the day. Add sketches, drawings, 3d views of the concept that you have in mind. The ones that you really want to work on and present them neatly because everyone likes organized drawings and spaces.

That was your guide to build an interior design portfolio. In case you haven’t worked on any live projects, put in your college assignments and the working drawing that you made. You will have to work a little hard if you want to build a great portfolio.
