It is normal to feel nervous before an important event. But to be constantly worried can affect an individual’s life in ways that are hard for most of us to contemplate. For people struggling with anxiety, it can be quite hard to see things the way they are. Even though you can not completely get rid of the anxiety right away, it is extremely important to be able to manage and work with it as you try to overcome anxiety. It is also very important to believe that you can overcome anxiety in order to do so.
Here are some tips that you can take to overcome anxiety.
Should you ditch sugar?
It’s not a hidden fact that sugar is bad for your health. After a certain age, the intake of a high amount of sugar increases the risk of chronic diseases. But sugar does not just affect your physical health. It also has a great impact on your mental health. Are you ever feeling low and tired and you feel boosted after having a donut or soda? Even though you feel quite energized after having a soda, the sugar actually has an opposite effect on your brain. Sugar and saturated fats are related to anxiety in adults over the age of 60.
Focus on the present
We have all heard that the present is the only thing we have in our hands. The past is done and the future is out of our control. Therefore, focus on the now. Focus on what you can do to make now better, to make now worthwhile rather than being worried about what will happen in the future because it completely depends on how well you deal with the present. So, take a deep breath in and let go of whatever you can’t control and focus on yourself and what you have in your hand and make the best of it.
Care for yourself
Self-care is crucial when you are dealing with anxiety. It sure feels good when your needs are met and it’s a fact that your body responds positively to it. So, if you exercise regularly your body will automatically feel deprived if it doesn’t get it. Therefore, when you care for yourself regularly it will become a habit and then you wouldn’t have to force it anymore.
Say no to Caffeine
Caffeine can boost your energy level as it gives a jolt to your nervous system. But the nervous system can easily induce an anxiety attack when you are under pressure. Caffeinated beverages increase your heart rate and are said to give you anxiety. But you don’t completely have to cut it off. it’s all about taking it moderately. If you drink four cups of coffee a day cut it down to two try it and see what difference it makes. And with time include other healthy beverages like herbal tea in your drinks.
Exercise certainly isn’t the first thing that comes in your mind when it’s overdriven by thoughts but it is considered very good in dealing with anxiety and is the best natural solution. Exercising releases endorphins and serotonin that help you feel better emotionally. You must have heard before that a healthy mind lives in a healthy body therefore if you feel better physically you will start feeling better mentally as well. You don’t have to do a heavy workout like lifting crazy weights. Just go take a walk or run for 10 min. Take your yoga mat and do some poses.
It is important to get the right amount of sleep. Yes, you must have heard some people brag how they only sleep for 4 hours a day and are coping up just fine. Yes, don’t listen to then and get a good 7-8hours of sleep. Sleep deprivation is known to be one of the causes of anxiety. That is why you need to decide a bedtime. Get in bed and read a book. That helps with falling asleep. Or listen to some music. Do something relaxing that puts your mind at ease. This will help you get good sleep.
Anxiety often comes from your desire to control things. When things don’t go as you have planned you get anxious. Do parties scare you? Or a big meeting gives you a gut-wrenching feeling? It is often because you think of what might go wrong. And that thought is more than enough to make a lot of things go wrong. Learning to let go is an art that you must learn in order to overcome anxiety. Do little things that make you happy. Make time for yourself and meditate. Calm your mind down by taking deep breaths when it’s running wild. These are a few things you can start with to let go of the bigger things that you have no control over.
Anxiety can be really hard to deal with. But it is not impossible to overcome. It is hard to deal with it but hold in there. You are stronger than your anxiety.
